Getting pregnant is the most fortunate thing which god gives to a women. Keeping this phase healthy is all in your hands. There are plethora of factors which are directly related with healthy pregnancy, such as; avoiding stress, eating healthy, being positive throughout the journey as well as refraining yourself from unhealthy foods and  drinks. The most common mistake  a pregnant lady does is not knowing the ins and outs about eating healthy and avoiding unhygienic food. What Not To Eat During Pregnancy ?

1. Undercooked Meat.

At this stage, you have to take care of non vegetarian diet a lot. If you are consuming undercooked or uncooked meat, it will be dangerous for your baby’s health. But it does not mean that you cannot eat non vegetarian food. Meat should be well steamed or properly cooked before eating. Avoid ready-to-eat meats, raw meats,steaks,sausages,turkey and meat spreads. To avoid cross contamination, store these foods away from other eatable items.

The reason of not consuming these types of meat is it can cause Toxoplasmosis- its a very small parasite which lives in these types of uncooked meats and it can directly effect your baby’s health.

2. Raw Fish.

Though, eating fish during pregnancy is a rich source of healthy oil called Omega-3 DHA which is essential for development of your baby’s eyes and brain. Other nutrients such as Vitamin D, iron, calcium, protein are also present in some certain types of fish.Hence, it is a great way to consume the healthy nutrients. A survey conducted shows that mothers to be who consumed healthy fish types twice or thrice a week have babies who reaches the milestones of development stages more quickly as compared to other babies.

But, there are some types of fish which must be avoided and are not safe for you and your baby. These are;

3. Alcohol.


Stay away from alcohol during pregnancy as it can cause number of health effects on baby’s development. Baby is attached with mother through umbilical cord. What ever the mother eats or drinks is directly related to baby’s health. Whether drinking a little amount or heavy amount is considered totally unsafe during pregnancy at any stage. 4. Caffeine.



Caffeine is the most popular stimulant which is consumed all over the world by people. The most common sources of caffeine are tea and coffee. Consumption of caffeine is safe if taken in limit during pregnancy but over intake causes many complications.

According to World Health Organization:
"For pregnant ladies with high each day caffeine consumption (more than three hundred mg in line with day), reducing every day caffeine consumption throughout being pregnant is suggested to reduce the hazard of pregnancy loss and low birth weight.”

During pregnancy, consumption of caffeine must be limited. Caffeine is present in many drinks and eatable items such as: Coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks, energy drinks and in some medications also.There are various problems which are linked with consumption of caffeine during pregnancy:

  • Good for the baby’s holistic development
  • Balances iron level in body
  • Rich source of protein

Strictly avoid eating raw eggs and uncooked eggs. It can cause Salmonella- which is a baleful bacteria.It affects the intestine. These uncooked or undercooked eggs are considered to be risky due to this bacterium so refrain yourself from eating it. You should cook it well before eating.

Unpasteurized milk and soft cheese should also be avoided in pregnancy. Listeria does not cause any major problem to the mother but is dramatically baleful for the new born baby. Listeria causes certain types of infections in infants like:

  • Urine infection
  • Miscarriage
  • Stillbirth

Consuming these can also cause harmful health problems in the new born baby.

7. Fruits.

This topic must be shocking for some as fruits provide many vitamins and nutrients to mother and child during pregnancy, but there are some fruits which must be avoided in pregnancy as these are good for nothing in this phase. These fruits are:

  • Papaya:
  • Papaya on the one hand increases your body temperature and moreover contains latex which causes certain complications like Miscarriage, loose motions. This fruit is strictly avoided during first and second trimester.

  • Pineapple:

It is harmful to eat during first trimester as it is linked to uterine contractions and results in early labour.

  • Dates

These raises up body temperature in pregnant women and also leads to uterine contractions. However, eating a single date or two is fine but not in excess amount.
